Care home manager Sarah is as good as gold

A highly-regarded care home manager’s dedication has been recognised with a gold award.

Sarah McCowan, 40, who runs the Hillside residential home in Pontypridd  which caters for adults with mental health problems, was honoured at the prestigious Wales Care Awards..

She was a finalist at the annual Wales Care Awards at Cardiff City Hall, organised by Care Forum Wales, where she came up trumps in the category for Promoting Fulfilled Lives was sponsored by Boots.

Sarah has been involved in the social care sector since the age of 17, and with her sister had previously owned and run a private residential home for adults with learning difficulties and autism. She shadowed another home manager for three months before taking up her present position with Ucan Care Ltd in May 2014. (more…)

Dynamic care home boss who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty takes gold in major national awards

A versatile care home manager who loves his job so much that he even likes to “muck in” with the cleaning and decorating has taken gold in major national awards.

Apart from being in charge at Y Gelli in Denbigh, a home for people with severe mental health problems, for more than 20 years Philip Williams is also a director of a mental health charity and skilfully guided its staff through a period of major change.

It is this dedicated and committed approach to his caring role that has helped 57-year-old Philip, who lives in Denbigh, to land gold in the Outstanding Service category, sponsored by Hallmark Care Homes, of the 2016 Wales Care Awards, known as the social care Oscars. (more…)

Artistic Mandy is as good as gold

An artistic nurse who has brought colour to the lives of residents at a Haverfordwest nursing home now has an extra colour – gold – on her palette.

Mandy Zatac, who joined the staff of Rickeston Mill Nursing Home 12 months ago, has created a series of colourful murals included a sea-themed lounge and a corner dedicated to film star Marilyn Monroe.

That helped her to gain a nomination for this year’s Wales Care Awards organised by Care Forum Wales to recognise exceptional standards in the care sector and at a ceremony in City Hall, Cardiff, she was presented with a gold award.

Mandy, 40, was nominated in the category for Excellence in Dementia Care, sponsored by FISC Healthcare. (more…)

Gold and silver awards at the double

A Nantyglo woman has enjoyed gold and silver celebrations within 48 hours.

For two days after her 50th birthday Helen Beecham was among the recipients at this year’s Wales Care Awards at a ceremony in City Hall, Cardiff at which the MC was opera singer and TV presenter Wynne Evans.

The awards are organised by Care Forum Wales to recognise exceptional work in the care sector and Helen won a silver award in the category for Leadership and Management in Residential Care Services. (more…)

Former labourer who built himself a solid career in caring strikes gold

A man who decided on a career in caring after visiting a residential home to do some building work and eventually rose to become its manager has struck gold in major national awards.

Andrew Papirnyk, who lives in Tywyn, Gwynedd, went along to Cerrig Camu in Dolgellau in the winter of 2004 to do some labouring work for the firm he was with at the time. He quickly built up a rapport with some of its residents and immediately opted to make caring his profession.

Nine years later he was appointed as the home’s registered manager and has been commended for the way he runs it and credited for helping to integrate clients with learning disabilities and mental health needs into the community. (more…)

Former A&E nurse celebrates national award success

A former A&E nurse who left her native Romania to become a care worker in Wales has struck gold at the industry’s ‘Oscars’.

Registered nurse Andreea Schiopu, who works as deputy manager at Mill View Care Home in Ystrad, Rhondda Cynon Taff, scooped the top gong in the Nurse of the Year category at the Wales Care Awards 2016.

The prestigious national awards, run by Care Forum Wales, acknowledge the hard work and exceptional performances of those in the care sector. (more…)
