A kickboxing care home manager was left floored when she received a prestigious award..<\/p>\n

Lorraine Jackson, Registered Manager of the Ty Hendy Care Home in Hendy, near Llanelli, received a gold award at this year\u2019s social care Oscars, the Wales Care Awards.<\/p>\n

The awards are organised by Care Forum Wales to reward outstanding work in the care sector and Lorraine was shortlisted in the category for Leadership in Residential Care Services.<\/p>\n

The prize giving ceremony was held at City Hall, Cardiff, and the MC for the evening was opera singer and radio presenter Wynne Evans, aka Gio Compario from the TV adverts for Go Compare.<\/p>\n

Lorraine, now 36, who lives in Tynewydd, Whitchurch, Cardiff, has worked in the caring profession since she was 17 and in the learning disability sector for the past 11 years.\u00a0 She has been the manager at Ty Hendy, which is owned by Consensus Support, since August, 2015.<\/p>\n

She was nominated for the award by Simon Kezic, the company\u2019s head of strategy, who spoke highly of her \u201cleading by example\u201d and making sure that a wide range of individuals with varying levels of need and complex conditions receive the tailored support they deserve.<\/p>\n

Ty Hendy has five self-contained flats for young adults with learning disabilities, eight rooms for people with more advanced learning disabilities and needs such as strokes, epilepsy and dementia, and a four-bed respite service.<\/p>\n

According to Simon, Lorraine\u2019s emphasis on supporting people to live with dignity has played a major part in changing the lives of so many.<\/p>\n

As an example, he quoted the case of a deaf resident who was persistently despondent and had limited communication with others at the home.<\/p>\n

Lorraine therefore arranged for colleagues to have British Sign Learning training, and eight members of support team are now proficient.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has led to significant improvements for him. He more fluidly and openly communicates with the care team at Ty Hendy,\u201d said Simon. \u201cHis behaviours have also been markedly reduced and he has expressed his gratitude for the kind gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has encouraged one group to cook for themselves, which has improved their lifestyles through healthy eating and learning about nutritional values, with the result that two of them have lost a substantial amount of weight.<\/p>\n

Following their recent visit to the home inspectors from the Care and Social Services Inspectorate commented on the \u201cperson-centred care\u201d being delivered, with residents being treated with \u201crespect, dignity and warmth\u201d.<\/p>\n

Lorraine, who lives with her partner and stepson, said she derived great satisfaction from helping people to develop their skills and was proud to think that her work was appreciated by those who had supported her nomination.<\/p>\n

Outside of work she loves working off her excess energy through kickboxing and has been a member of The Way Gym in Cardiff for eight years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI find it more interesting than just attending a gym, and I have a purple belt, which is below brown and black,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also enjoys football and supports Swansea City, though she hasn\u2019t had much chance to watch them over the past year.<\/p>\n

She was stunned\u00a0 to hear her name being called as the winner of the gold award on what she described as \u201ca really lovely evening\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just very happy to have been nominated and didn\u2019t expect to win gold,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Mario Kreft, the Chair of Care Forum Wales, said the standard of entries was extremely high.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThere are only winners here tonight so it is only fitting that the finalists will receive a gold, silver or bronze Wales Care Award.<\/p>\n

\u201cI trust that they will continue to inspire those around them as role models and encourage others to aspire to even greater heights in the months and years to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis awards ceremony is our opportunity to pay tribute and to celebrate the talent and commitment that is improving the quality of life for thousands and thousands of people throughout Wales.<\/p>\n
